# How to Check Whether a Backlink Is Indexed in Google

> 6 practical methods to verify if your backlinks are indexed in Google — from site: operator to bulk tools.

## Why Backlink Indexation Matters

A backlink that Google has not indexed does not pass link equity. Before a referring page can strengthen your rankings, Google must crawl and index it. Unindexed backlinks are invisible to the algorithm — verifying indexation is therefore a foundational step in any link-building workflow.

## Method 1 — site: Operator

The quickest manual check: type `site:referring-domain.com/page-path` into Google Search. A result confirms indexation; zero results indicate the page is absent from Google's index.

**Limitation:** The site: operator is not exhaustive. Use it as a first-pass signal, not a definitive verdict.

## Method 2 — Google Search Console URL Inspection

For URLs you control, the URL Inspection tool in Search Console gives the most authoritative indexation status. It reports whether a URL is indexed, crawled but excluded, or blocked entirely.

For third-party backlink pages you do not own, this tool is unavailable — use a different method.

## Method 3 — Ahrefs / Semrush Crawl Databases

Major SEO platforms maintain their own crawl databases. A URL present in Ahrefs Site Explorer or Semrush's index is a strong signal that Google has also indexed it. Note crawl lag: these databases update on their own schedule, often with a delay of several days.

## Method 4 — Bing URL Inspection

Bing Webmaster Tools offers a URL inspection feature similar to Google Search Console. Bing and Google share significant crawl overlap; a page indexed by Bing is likely indexed by Google, though not guaranteed.

## Method 5 — Bulk Index Checking

When auditing dozens or hundreds of backlinks, manual checks are not practical. A [bulk index checker](https://en.speedyindex.com/google-index-checker/) accepts a list of URLs and returns indexation status for each, allowing you to prioritise follow-up on high-value unindexed links.

## Method 6 — Programmatic Verification

For teams that manage large link portfolios, a Python script using the `requests` library can automate the site: query pattern across a URL list. Pair this with a spreadsheet export for stakeholder reporting.

## What to Do When a Backlink Is Not Indexed

1. Confirm the referring page is reachable (no 404, no redirect loop)
2. Check that robots.txt and meta robots do not block the page
3. Verify the link is `dofollow` and visible in the page's HTML
4. If you have Search Console access, request indexation via the URL Inspection tool
5. For pages you do not own, consider an indexation acceleration service

## Running a Monthly Indexation Audit

Professional link-building teams audit backlink indexation on a monthly cadence:

* Export your backlink list from your SEO tool
* Run URLs through a [bulk checker](https://en.speedyindex.com/google-index-checker/)
* Segment into: **indexed**, **not yet indexed**, **inaccessible**
* Flag high-DA links unindexed after 30 days for priority follow-up
